Legacy Reader Digest: June edition

June 14, 2016

Every month, team Legacy will curate the essential online pieces for you to read, watch and listen to.

This June, we bring you a short essay on Bob Dylan’s imperial phase of 1965-66;
a time portal into the Second Summer of Love with a classic Simon Reynolds interview with the Stone Roses;
six lifelong punks look back on their wild heyday;
a 1996 interview with the Manics in the build up to Everything Must Go
and a dip into the BBC Archive, with a chaotic Hendrix performance on the Lulu Show, and Carole King performing “A Natural Woman”.

The Stone Roses, interview in Melody Maker, June 3rd 1989 by Simon Reynolds

We’re all anti-royalist, anti-patriarch. Cos it’s 1989. Time to get real. When the ravens leave the Tower of London, England shall fall, they say. We want to be there shooting the ravens. ”

Manic Street Preachers – Read Their Classic ‘Everything Must Go’ NME Interview From 1996

“You can’t really fault Nicky, James and Sean for wanting to change their situation – choosing bouts of normality over chaos, plugging for optimism rather than self-immolation. Behind them lies an awful, unanswered lyric: “from despair to where?” Part of their job now is to respond to that poser….”
