July 26, 2016

Every month, team Legacy will curate the essential online pieces for you to read, watch and listen to.

This July, we bring you a November 1976 Rolling Stone cover story on Janis Joplin;
A love letter in The Quietus to Tapestry and Carole King’s performance in Hyde Park;
A trip down the 60s wormhole with a Jon Savage BBC Arena documentary on the Year the Decade Exploded, 1966 – plus a beautiful gallery of the 60s Pop Scene, through the lens of photographer Stanley Bielecki;
And after the their recent mammoth, essential boxset, The Guardian and Rock’s Backpages present a 1976 Phonograph Record interview with one of the 70s wildest acts: The Isley Brothers.

Janis Joplin On Her Own Terms – A story from the November 18th, 1976 issue of Rolling Stone

“Joplin belonged to that select group of pop figures who mattered as much for themselves as for their music; among American rock performers she was second only to Bob Dylan in importance as a creator/recorder/embodiment of her generation’s history and mythology. “The Isley Brothers will never stand still” – A Classic 1976 interview from the vaults

“Ernie Isley lives with his mother in a sleepy ranch house, tucked off a winding Teaneck back road… also home to brother-in-law Chris Jasper and the youngest Isley, Marvin. The three, none of whom is over 24, joined their celebrated older brothers, Ronald, Rudolph and Kelly in 1969 and it’s not a coincidence that the transfusion of fresh, young talent paralleled the emergence of the Isley Brothers as a vital force in black music…”

Where You Lead: Carole King & The Lifespans Of Pop Music – Article in The Quietus

“I cried at ‘Home Again’, four songs in, and I did well to make it that far. I held out longer than most. Home. Again. I cried for a vanished family household where ‘Tapestry’ turned on the record deck more weeks than not. Everybody cried, for love and loss and passing time, tears brought up from the well of memory…  ‘Tapestry’ is locked into that many lives, in that remarkable way.”
